The measure was adopted last year with Settlers 7, and since then all the most important titles from Ubisoft came up with the PC discussed DRM that prevents you from playing without an internet connection active. The network connection, apparently, was not entirely abandoned to launch the game seems to be still require activation, as reported on Reddit a few players.
