During a recent interview with Reuters, Kaz Hirai - President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment - admitted that the PlayStation Network service is not yet a source of profit for his company, compared to around 36 billion yen ( or $ 430 million) in turnover for the current year. The reason for this of course lies in the fact that the service is free, while Microsoft competitor requires the payment of a monthly fee for Xbox Live (which, in fact, generates substantial revenue for the Redmond).
Hirai, however, expected to see sales increased almost tenfold to PSN within the next three years.
