The boss of Sony Corporation, Sir Howard Stringer, has written a letter to the community of PlayStation Network. Dear friends, I know this has been a frustrating time for all of you. Let me assure you that all resources of this company have been entirely devoted to investigate the true nature and impact of cyber attack that we've been subjected and to resolve problems that have resulted.
We are totally committed to restore as soon as possible a complete and secure and properly reward your patience. We do not settle for anything less. To date there is no confirmed evidence that have been withheld by fraud or personal information relating to credit cards, and we continue to closely monitor the situation.
We are also progressing in the project to protect our customers around the world from identity theft. A program for U.S. users of the PlayStation Network and Qriocity providing one million dollars of insurance against identity theft has been launched and upcoming announcements for the other territories.
As previously announced, we will offer a package of "Welcome back" to our customers as soon as Qriocity PlayStation Network and services will be online again. This will include, among other things, a free month subscription PlayStation Plus for all our clients and extension of the subscription PSN for PlayStation Plus and Music Unlimited subscribers that allows them to catch up.
I apologize personally and on behalf of the company, for all the inconvenience caused to users from this attack. Under the leadership of Kazuo Hirai, we have teams of full-time job in the world to restore access to services as quickly and safety. I know someone has asked if we should first warn our customers.
It 's a fair question. As soon as we found out the size of the potential damage caused by the intrusion, we have disabled the PlayStation Network and Qriocity and hired some of the best experts to determine exactly what had happened. I wish I could have gotten before the answers to those questions, but forensic analysis is a complex process and takes time.
Hackers, after all, are doing their best to cover their tracks, and it took time for our experts to find these tracks and see what, if any data was stolen. As soon as we got the results as we have updated promptly. Our investigation is still ongoing and we are enhancing the security so we can find even more prepared if such attacks occur again.
In recent months Sony has had to face a terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Now we are faced with a rather unexpected event caused by man (a criminal attack against us - and against you) and we are working with the FBI and law enforcement agencies around the world in order to arrest those responsible .
In the coming days, will be the restoration of network service and all you can come back again and have fun. Personally I wanted to let you know that we are committed to the best of our ability to protect your data and get you back to take advantage of those services for which you registered with: all the great games and entertainment experience that you expect from Sony.
Best Regards, Howard Stringer
