According to John Carmack, founder and technical director of id Software, Next Generation Portable 3DS Sony and Nintendo could be the last handheld dedicated. "You can not continue to build pyramids just because you want it," Carmack told the Dallas Morning News (via VG247). According to Carmack, who created a version of Rage devices intended for IOS, in terms of graphics smartphones are able to achieve performance similar to those of the two handheld consoles.
"The smartphone might reach close to 80% of the potential benefits of dedicated handheld consoles," says Carmack. "The question that everyone is making is: how many people are content with this 80%? Frankly, I do not know the answer."
